ACE COMBAT 8 PC Crash and Error 01 Troubleshooting
Published

Match the symptom to your next action
Official sourceCommunity-reportedStart with the exact message and the point where the game stops. The September 29 Product Notice acknowledges unexpected Steam PC crashes; the October 2 PC Crash Report Thread asks for details while the team investigates.
| What happens | Safe first action | What is known | When to report |
|---|---|---|---|
| Closes at startup without a dialog | Note the launch stage. Check the recommended driver, installation SSD space and Windows virtual memory one at a time. | Developer suggestions may help; they do not guarantee a repair. | It still fails after the three checks. |
| Error 01 or “out of video memory” | Capture the complete wording. Record GPU model, driver, RAM and Windows version. | Community-reported wording; no universal official cause established. | The error repeats; include the full message in the PC report. |
| Crashes during a mission | Record mission, last action, time until failure and repeatable steps. | A mission crash does not establish a mission-specific cause. | The same sequence fails again after the official checks. |
| ST-3100001 in ACE COMBAT ONLINE | Read the separate September 30 notice and synchronize Windows time. | Official online server-communication loss, a different error class. | The online session issue persists. |
| Steam Deck, Linux or Proton | Record the platform and consult platform-specific support. | This Windows checklist does not establish a Proton repair. | Report your exact platform and symptoms. |
Before changing anything: capture the crash
Official source- 1Confirm you are using the Steam Windows PC build. Console and Linux players should use their platform’s support instructions.
- 2Write down the full error text, game version if available, Windows version and whether the failure occurs at startup, in a menu or during a mission.
- 3For a mission crash, record the mission, last action, time before failure and steps that reproduce it. Remove personal information from any screenshot you attach.
The three developer checks
Official sourceThe developer’s September 29 advice is a starting point for Steam Windows PC crashes. Change one item at a time and retest so your report identifies what changed the result.
- 1Driver: compare your installed GPU driver with the recommended version shown when the game launches. If you can reach the prompt, note that version before changing anything; otherwise report that you could not reach it. Obtain drivers through the GPU manufacturer’s official service. The newest driver is not automatically the recommended one.
- 2SSD: locate the game’s installation drive in Steam, then open Windows File Explorer → This PC and check that SSD’s available space. Keep at least 16 GB free there, as the developer recommends. This is free space on the installation drive, not the game’s download size. Move or remove files you recognize; leave saves and system files intact.
- 3Virtual memory: confirm Windows paging is enabled. Open Advanced system settings → Advanced → Performance Settings → Advanced → Virtual memory → Change. If paging is disabled, consult Microsoft’s guidance; an automatically managed or system-managed configuration is a starting point rather than an arbitrary fixed size. Apply changes and restart if Windows requests it.
Retest, then consider a file check
Official sourceTry the same launch or mission sequence after each change and note the outcome. One successful launch is encouraging but does not prove lasting stability; record whether the same failure returns.
If you suspect missing or damaged installation files, use the optional general Steam check below. It checks the installed files; it is not an ACE COMBAT 8 developer-confirmed fix for Error 01.
- 1Restart the computer and open Steam. In Library, right-click ACE COMBAT 8 and choose Properties.
- 2Open Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. Let the process finish before retesting. Avoid running other intensive disk tasks or verifying several games at once.
- 3If the crash continues, keep the error and your results and prepare the official report below.
What Error 01 and memory messages tell you
Community-reportedError 01 and “out of video memory” appear in community reports. The official crash notice does not define a universal cause for Error 01, and that wording alone does not prove your GPU is defective. Include the entire message, GPU, installed driver, RAM and Windows version in your report.
Use official game, OS and hardware-vendor support channels. Avoid unverified crash-fix executables or instructions to disable antivirus or anti-cheat. Keep your report focused on what happened and what you changed.
Prepare a report the developer can use
Official sourceIf the crash continues, post the details in the official October 2 PC Crash Report Thread. The team requests PC specifications, Windows and system software versions, the error and reproduction steps, plus other running applications if possible.
Copy this template and fill in what you know. Keep unknown fields marked unknown rather than guessing; add the result of each check so the team can follow your sequence.
Platform/store: Windows PC / Steam Game version or build date: Windows version and relevant updates: CPU: GPU and graphics driver version: RAM: Free space on game-install SSD: Windows virtual memory enabled? yes/no/unknown: Exact error message or code: Where it happens (startup/menu/mission): Steps to reproduce: Other apps open: Official checks tried and results: Screenshots/logs: remove passwords, tokens and personal information.
Online errors and other platforms
Official sourceST-3100001 is a separate online problem: the developer’s September 30 notice describes loss of communication with the ACE COMBAT ONLINE server and recommends synchronizing Windows time. Open Windows Date & time settings and use the time-sync control, then retry the online session.
This guide covers the Steam Windows launch build released October 2, 2026, with sources checked October 9. Windows virtual-memory menus do not apply to Steam Deck or Linux/Proton, and these notices do not establish an equivalent Proton fix. Include your operating system in a platform-specific report.
