Over the Hill is a relaxed off-road exploration game. Drive handcrafted areas solo or with up to three friends; each player earns their own objective completion. Start with a reachable destination and a plan for getting unstuck.

Open guideThe first post-launch patch is 26.10.16_57fb763, released October 16, 2026, after the October 14 launch. Let Steam finish updating before following launch-week fixes.
| What you see | What to do next |
|---|---|
| Invisible terrain on an older GPU, such as Nvidia GTX | Update and revisit the same area. The developer says the fix is automatic whether or not you used -msTessOnce 0; that old workaround is no longer required for this defect. Leave unrelated custom settings alone. |
| No Pebbles after repeating a trail or recovery mission | The patch fixes those repeat rewards. Try the completed activity again and check your in-game award; no exact payout or fastest-farm route is published. |
| An older meteorite spot is empty | Spawn points changed in every area. Use the current in-game map and visible terrain, then choose an outing with the planner. |
| A joining client hangs at a portal after camping | The same-session camp-then-portal sequence received a fix. Update and use the co-op guide’s report checks if it persists. |
Explore in 1960s–1980s-inspired 4×4 vehicles, choose a trail and work your way through terrain. The destination might be a remote cabin, a viewpoint, a meteorite or a portal to another area. There is no need to approach the journey as a lap-time contest: the studio describes exploration as the point of the drive.
You can also photograph animals for the wildlife compendium, find equipment and personalize your vehicle. A useful first goal is a short expedition with one destination, rather than trying to clear every activity at once.
Use this as a beginner route-planning checklist based on the published features. It is a suggested way to organize a session, rather than a mandatory mission order.
The developer FAQ describes regions divided into individual areas or levels. Think of choosing an area and exploring its routes, rather than expecting one enormous procedurally generated map. The same area can be explored alone or with friends.
Portals are among the discoveries described on the official game page. Look for your next connection while exploring, and use landmarks to keep track of where you have already driven. Weather and the day/night cycle can change conditions along a familiar route.

For a gap, inspect whether your available planks offer a crossing. For a stuck vehicle, check your winch options and the game’s current prompts before adding more throttle. The Steam description explicitly presents both tools as ways to overcome terrain.
For a meteorite that remains stuck, keep the exact location and a screenshot of the cable setup when asking for help. The June Demo extraction advice circulating online belongs to that older build; use current in-game instructions and the official community for a launch-specific problem.
The developer FAQ says completed objectives and progress carry between solo and multiplayer. In a group, however, each player must reach the checkpoint themselves. Helping a teammate complete the route does not complete your own checkpoint for you.
| Topic | Solo | Online co-op |
|---|---|---|
| Group size | One player | Up to four total, including the host |
| Area access | Explore an area alone | Explore an area with friends |
| Checkpoint objectives | Reach the point yourself | Every player needing credit reaches it personally |
| Completed objectives | Carry into multiplayer | Carry back to solo |
| Local co-op | Single-player mode | Developer FAQ says local co-op is not currently feasible |
Wildlife photography, finding equipment and visiting cabins give you different reasons to leave the road. Match your next stop to what you want from the trip.
| You want to… | Try this next |
|---|---|
| Record wildlife | Use the in-game camera to photograph animals you encounter and build the compendium. |
| Find another route | Explore toward a viewpoint, natural landmark or portal. |
| Change your vehicle’s appearance | Visit a merchant or cabin to inspect colours, accessories and cosmetics. |
| Prepare for harder terrain | Inspect equipment and upgrades found while exploring before choosing the next obstacle. |
| Resolve missing completion | Compare your own objective status with your teammate’s, then use the co-op progress guide. |

Over the Hill released on Steam for PC on October 14, 2026. The official site lists Xbox Series, PlayStation 5 and Switch 2 for 2027. For a group playing now, plan around the available Steam PC version.
The FAQ confirms crossplay as a feature, but the later console release means that a general crossplay answer is not evidence of a PC-to-console party today. Local split-screen is also separate from online co-op: the developer says local co-op is not currently feasible.
The privacy-enhanced player loads only after activation and never autoplays.
