Over the Hill Co-op Progress & Missing Vehicle Checks

Published Updated

In Over the Hill co-op, each player must reach the checkpoint themselves to complete an objective. Completed objectives carry between solo and multiplayer. If a vehicle is still locked, check its exact unlock requirement separately from your checkpoint status.

Client loads forever after camping and a portal?

Official patch

The October 16 patch fixes clients loading indefinitely when taking a portal after camping in the same session. Update to 26.10.16_57fb763 or later and, if safe, retest that specific action sequence once. It is a loading fix, separate from personal checkpoint credit.

  1. 1Confirm whether the affected player was host or a joining client and record the game build.
  2. 2Record the area, when you camped, the destination portal, whether it was the same session and the point where loading stopped.
  3. 3If the sequence still fails after updating, report those steps and screenshots without exposing room codes. Keep your saves intact.

Pebbles, checkpoint completion and a vehicle unlock

The patch also fixes repeat Pebble rewards for challenge trails and recovery missions. A missing repeat reward is a different state from an uncredited checkpoint or an unmet vehicle requirement. Check the affected player’s objective and exact vehicle unlock condition separately; a friend completing the trail is not proof your own condition was met.

The earlier FAQ still describes up to four players online including the host, with completed objectives carrying between solo and multiplayer for that player. The October 16 patch does not establish local split-screen support.

One shared journey, separate completion records

Official source

The developer’s pinned FAQ makes two connected points: teammates can help each other reach an objective, and progress is tracked individually. A successful drive by one person therefore does not stand in for every player arriving at the required checkpoint.

For example, if your friend has reached a checkpoint while you are still on the approach, their completed objective and your pending objective can be consistent with the published rule. Have the affected player reach the point, then compare that player’s result.

Check missing personal completion in six steps

Official source

Start with the affected player’s record. These checks follow the developer’s personal-progress rule; they do not depend on a particular menu layout or invitation method.

  1. 1Ask each person to inspect their own objective or completion indicator. Identify whose objective is pending and whose is complete.
  2. 2Confirm the exact objective label and area are the same. Check whether this is a checkpoint objective, rather than assuming every vehicle reward uses checkpoint rules.
  3. 3Travel to the checkpoint with the affected player. Friends can help along the route, but that player must personally reach the checkpoint.
  4. 4Inspect the affected player’s completion indicator again. Write down whether the objective changed to complete, stayed pending, or was already complete.
  5. 5If a vehicle remains locked, read its exact unlock requirement in your game. Compare that requirement with your own completed task, rather than substituting a teammate’s result.
  6. 6If the state still appears inconsistent, capture the objective, vehicle name, area, player count and screenshots. Use the report checklist below to ask the official community for help.

Checkpoint complete, but the vehicle is still locked?

Official source

Treat objective completion and the vehicle’s eligibility condition as two separate checks. The FAQ explains personal checkpoint credit; it does not define a universal reward rule for recovered vehicles. A rescue involving several players cannot, by itself, tell you who should receive a particular car.

Read the requirement shown for the locked vehicle, if one is displayed. Compare the exact task, area and your own completion state. If there is no clear requirement, include that fact in your report instead of repeating an unrelated checkpoint or changing your save.

Moving from solo to co-op, and back to solo

Official source

According to the developer FAQ, progress and completed objectives are saved and transferred between single-player and multiplayer. You can explore an area alone, complete an objective, then continue with friends without treating that objective as a new shared campaign task.

The same statement covers returning from co-op to solo. If a completed objective appears missing, compare the exact objective and area on the same player before drawing a conclusion about a save problem. Take screenshots of both states if they differ.

The FAQ describes what persists, rather than the technical save-hosting implementation. It is not a specification for shared shops, vehicle ownership or every inventory item. Check a vehicle’s own requirement when the objective record is correct but the expected reward is absent.

A group checklist before reporting a bug

Official source
  • Count everyone, including the host: online co-op supports four players total.
  • Identify the player missing completion or the expected vehicle.
  • Compare the exact objective label and area on each player’s own record.
  • For a checkpoint objective, ensure every player needing credit reaches it personally.
  • Recheck the affected player’s completion indicator after arrival.
  • Read the locked vehicle’s own requirement separately from objective completion.
  • Capture screenshots and the session details if the two states still conflict.

Give support a case they can investigate

Official source

Keep the report specific enough for another person to distinguish normal personal progression from an apparent mismatch. A useful report describes the affected player’s actions and visible result, alongside what their teammate sees.

Objective and areaExact objective label, checkpoint and area; a map screenshot helps locate the case.

Can your group use split-screen or console crossplay?

Official source

Online co-op is available for up to four total players. That count includes the host: one person can play with up to three friends. The developer says each area can also be played alone.

Local co-op is not currently feasible according to the FAQ. For console friends, the official site schedules Xbox Series, PlayStation 5 and Switch 2 versions for 2027. Use the available Steam PC version for a group playing at the October 2026 PC launch; recheck platform availability before planning a cross-platform session.
